How to Improve Your Amazon Book Detail Page

Help readers choose your book with a clearer description, useful A+ content, credible author details, and video that shows what is inside.

Published Updated

A useful Amazon book detail page makes three things clear: who the book is for, what the reader will get, and why this particular book is a good choice. Improve those answers before paying for more traffic. A strong manuscript still needs a cover, description, and supporting content that communicate its value.

This guide turns Adigy’s founder’s publishing and advertising experience into a practical review process. The examples below are fictional illustrations, not measured customer results. If you are still diagnosing traffic quality, start with Amazon Ads getting clicks but no sales.

1. Start with the reader and the promise

Write a private one-sentence brief: “This book helps [reader] achieve or experience [specific outcome], using [distinctive approach].” For fiction, the outcome may be an emotional experience rather than a skill. For a workbook, separate the buyer from the person completing the exercises: a parent and a child have different questions.

Then compare the brief with the actual product page on a phone. Does the cover communicate the appropriate genre and level? Can someone understand the title at thumbnail size? Does the first description paragraph confirm that they have found the right book?

For a beginner’s rose-growing guide, useful differences might include container-specific advice, illustrated pruning instructions, or a seasonal care planner. “Comprehensive” and “high quality” give readers little to compare. A photograph of a real pruning diagram gives them something concrete. Use only differences the book genuinely delivers.

  • Audience: beginner, experienced practitioner, gift buyer, parent, or another clearly defined reader.
  • Scope: the subjects and situations the book addresses, including important boundaries.
  • Experience: story tone, explanation style, exercises, illustrations, or practical reference material.
  • Format: confirm that the selected edition offers what the page describes.

2. Rewrite the description around a buying decision

Start with a recognizable need, then explain the approach and provide evidence from the contents. Give each paragraph one job. Short paragraphs and a few specific bullets help a reader scan before deciding to read closely.

A fictional before-and-after example

Before: “The ultimate rose book for everyone. This comprehensive guide is packed with amazing tips to transform your garden.”

After: “Want to grow roses on a small patio but unsure where to begin? This beginner’s guide walks you through choosing a container, establishing a watering routine, and recognizing common problems. Illustrated pruning steps and a seasonal care planner help you decide what to do next.”

The revised version identifies a situation, addresses uncertainty, and names useful contents. It also sets a boundary: it is for beginners with limited space. Publish that wording only for a book that actually contains those features. For a novel, use the same principle to establish character, conflict, and tone without revealing the resolution.

Ask a reader unfamiliar with the manuscript what they expect to receive after reading your description. Their answer exposes ambiguities more reliably than repeatedly polishing the same sentence yourself. If they expect photographs but the book contains line drawings, correct the expectation.

When editing, follow KDP’s description instructions. KDP supports basic formatting and limits the field to 4,000 characters, including HTML. Its restrictions exclude testimonials, customer-review requests, website links, pricing information, and keyword-tag lists from this field. Keep endorsements in an appropriate permitted location.

3. Show the interior with A+ content

Use A+ content to answer questions that the cover cannot. Design a small sequence: who the book serves, what is inside, and how a reader might use it. Carry through the cover’s visual identity, but give each section new information.

A workbook benefits from a readable example exercise. A reference book benefits from showing how its information is organized. A cookbook can demonstrate the recipe layout and photography style. For fiction, a restrained introduction to the setting or series can establish the reading experience.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways if needed.

Will I understand this?A readable sample explanation and its accompanying diagram. The sample reflects the book’s actual level.
Can I use it in practice?A real worksheet with a short explanation of its purpose. The page is legible on mobile; no invented extra features.
Which book in the series fits me?A comparison of your own relevant titles.Differences are factual and each title is accurately represented.

Use text modules for explanatory copy where practical. Tiny paragraphs embedded in a large image are difficult to read on a phone. Describe meaningful images in alternative text so readers using assistive technology receive useful information.

Check Amazon’s A+ content guidelines before submission. They restrict customer reviews, promotional prices, purchase commands, and language such as “free” or “bonus.” Alternative text must describe the image. A useful included worksheet can be demonstrated without presenting it as a promotional giveaway.

4. Build credible reasons to trust the book

Explain relevant experience in the author biography. A current author photograph and consistent identity can help readers connect the book with its creator. Use a pen name consistently where appropriate; do not invent professional qualifications to fill a perceived gap.

A foreword by a relevant expert can provide context if that person has genuinely contributed. Explain what their expertise has to do with the subject. A title after someone’s name is less useful when the connection to the book is unclear.

Editorial endorsements and customer reviews serve different purposes. Attribute genuine editorial quotations accurately, obtain permission where needed, and use the options available through Amazon Author Central. Several excerpts from one review remain one endorsement. A press release written by the publisher is not an independent review by the outlet that hosts it.

Read customer feedback for recurring expectation gaps: insufficient examples, unexpected difficulty, or an unclear format. Correct the product or its presentation where appropriate. For review requests, KDP prohibits compensation in exchange for reviews; free or discounted books must not come with a review obligation or an attempt to influence the response.

5. Use video to answer practical questions

A clear page-through can show the layout, physical scale, illustration style, and space for writing. It helps a buyer understand what will arrive. A useful demonstration does not require exaggerated praise.

Before commissioning work, decide which uncertainty the video should resolve and which format it must show. Our shoppable-video guide includes a creator brief and delivery checklist. Use the creator directory to find potential collaborators, then confirm their current services, rights, and placement eligibility.

6. Prioritize improvements and measure carefully

  1. Fix misleading or missing information first. Check the selected format, cover, description, and availability.
  2. Clarify the promise. Rewrite the opening and identify a real differentiator.
  3. Demonstrate the contents. Improve the sample and A+ presentation; commission video where it solves a useful question.
  4. Improve discovery. Review backend keywords for relevance to the same audience.
  5. Record changes. Note the date, format, market, price, campaign changes, and seasonal conditions before comparing later results.

A sales increase after an edit does not establish that the edit caused it. Traffic quality, price, competition, seasonality, and reporting delays can change at the same time. Where practical, make a coherent change and allow enough relevant traffic to learn from it within an affordable budget.
